Mexico Public Safety extinguished an apartment fire Saturday evening.
Firefighters were dispatched to an apartment building fire in the 400 block of West Monroe around 5:36 Saturday night, according to a news release. When they arrived at the scene, firefighters saw flames coming from the upper level of the building.
The apartment building had eight units, a laundromat and an attic. One of the apartments was fully engulfed in flames and flames were spreading to other units and the attic, according to the release.
After extinguishing the fire, firefighters determined that the fully involved unit was severely damaged and about a quarter of the attic was damaged. The entire building sustained smoke and water damage, according to the release.
Although Mexico Public Safety said all occupants of the building made it out safely, a dog and two cats died in the fire.
