Three pets die in two Decatur fires

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur Fire Department responded to two fires late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. While no one was injured in the fire, a cat and two dogs were engulfed in the fire.

The first fire broke out Tuesday night around 10:20 p.m. in a car parked in a garage at 1321 W. Rock Springs Rd. One resident was in the home and escaped the fire thanks to a working smoke alarm.

While searching the home, firefighters found an unresponsive cat. Firefighters tried to revive the cat but were unsuccessful.

Fire officials believe that the cause of the fire was an electrical fault in the car.

The department was dispatched to a house fire near the corner of Jasper St. and Whitmer St., called by an on-duty police officer. Firefighters found a garage on fire attached to a home.

One person was in the home and was evacuated after hearing smoke alarms. None of the crew were injured.

Crews found two dogs unresponsive inside the home. Attempts to revive the dogs were unsuccessful.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Decatur Fire Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
