Pet Project: Helping Dogs Sleep at Night

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Dogs need 9-14 hours of sleep a day, but some dogs have trouble getting a good night’s rest.

In this week’s Pet Project, Carol Erickson, PSPCA advocate, explains some of the reasons why dogs don’t sleep well and even want their humans to walk around or play at night.

Some of the reasons dogs become restless at night include pain or other medical problems, not getting enough exercise during the day, cognitive impairment, separation anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, Erickson said. A veterinarian can help identify and treat these problems.

Noise that doesn’t bother humans, such as the low hum of a heating system or something outside, can be loud enough to disturb your dog’s sleep. If that’s the problem, white or pink noise can help, Erickson said.

You can watch the full interview with Erickson in the video player above. Stick around until the end to meet some of the animals available for adoption at the PSPCA.
