My husband wants to limit how much we spend on sick pets.

Annie Lynn Dear Annie writes the advice column.

Dear Annie: I have had dogs my whole life and treat them like family members. When they are sick, they go to the doctor and get the medicine they need. I have spent thousands of dollars on surgeries for my dogs and recently spent hundreds more on blood tests and diagnoses for separate problems.

My husband thinks it’s ridiculous to spend so much money on animal care and he wonders what we should spend on our “pets” before we basically allow them to die. Do you think we should have a limit on what we spend on veterinary care for our family members? How do you decide to stop spending money on them when they have so much life to live? Thanks for your advice. — Infinite love

Pets Unlimited: Each person has a different threshold for the dollar amount they are willing to spend on a pet. In the future, it might make sense to discuss what that number is before getting an animal with a partner. Consider your financial situation and the difficulties of rehabilitating your pet when having this conversation.
