How to Protect Pets During Coyote Mating Season

ARKANSAS, USA — Coyote mating season is upon us, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFCHere are some tips to keep you and your pet safe.

Late January to early March is considered coyote mating season. This period usually lasts four to six weeks with a peak in February.

The AGFC says to do the following to keep pets safe:

  • Coyotes are wild animals, so keep your distance. If you have a small animal and you see a coyote in the area, you may want to stay close to your pet.
  • A fence is a good way to keep coyotes out of your yard. As humans continue to encroach on their habitat, the chances of sightings increase.
  • If you are walking your dog, you should always keep your pet on a leash and possibly carry a walking stick, or something that makes noise to scare away coyotes.
  • Make sure you are not attracting coyotes by leaving dog food out.

The AGFC also says that coyote hunting season is year-round on private land and that they are abundant in Arkansas, so seeing them is not unusual.
