Fraudsters target owners of lost pets with latest scam – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

DAYTON – Officials are issuing a warning about a scam targeting pet owners.

According to a post shared on social media by the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center (ARC), someone is contacting owners of lost pets and claiming to be with the Animal Resource Center.

ARC is urging people not to fall prey to this scam. They are telling people not to engage or click on a link and contact the caller.

The scammer is pretending to have found a lost pet and telling the owner that in order to claim their pet, they must verify a code that will be sent to them.

“If your dog gets lost and ends up at the shelter, we always ask that you come to the shelter first to identify your pet,” ARC officials said.
