A wolf hybrid kept as a family pet in Alabama, USA, attacked and killed a 3-month-old baby, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. Deputies received an emergency call around 1 p.m., reporting an animal attack involving an infant at a residence on County Road 440 in Chelsea.

The infant was taken to a nearby hospital in Birmingham, a suburb of Chelsea, where the child was pronounced dead from injuries suspected to have been caused by the wolf hybrid. “The animal, described as a wolf hybrid, was reportedly kept as a pet by the family,” police said in a press release.

A wolf hybrid is a canine with a mixture of wolf and dog ancestry, and the family was aware of the wolf ancestry, Shelby County Coroner Lena Evans confirmed to CNN. The animal was euthanized at the scene and taken to the Alabama State Diagnostic Laboratory.

Officials told media that the incident is under investigation, and an autopsy will be conducted.

“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate and tragic event,” Chelsea Mayor Tony Picklesimer said in a statement Friday. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and all those affected.”

“It’s just unimaginable that this could happen to this child,” he added. “If you choose to have an exotic pet, it comes with additional responsibilities to ensure not only the safety of your family, but also the safety of your neighbors.”

The mother of a three-month-old girl, who was killed by a pet dog, has admitted to being responsible for the dog that killed her daughter. According to the BBC, a girl named Kyra King was attacked in March of this year in Lincolnshire, England, when her parents were walking 19 dogs.
