In a post on social media, ACS said it would have “zero tolerance” for weather-related violations. Anyone found violating the pet laws can face confiscation of their pet, fines of up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail for repeat violators.
Animal care officers will be on patrol to deal with potential violations.
Anyone needing to report a concern can call the city’s 3-1-1 customer service line or Report it online.. If you are unable to reach 3-1-1, you can contact SAPD’s non-emergency line by dialing 210-207-7273.
ACS reminded people that chaining dogs is always against the law and offered the following tips to keep animals safe in cold weather:
Bring your pets inside to protect them from the cold.
Provide shelter for outdoor pets with three walls, a raised floor and a roof.
Make sure pets always have access to food and clean water.
Before starting your car, check for outside cats that are looking for heat near the hood or tires.
