Abandoned pet found in rubbish dump in Norfolk

Norfolk, Va. It rolled across the sidewalk on Granby Street. That’s when community members stepped in.

A co-owner of The Village Mermaid Antiques Store told 10 On Your Side that she found a leopard gecko and its aquarium amid a pile of trash outside her store on Wednesday. He believed he had been left out in the cold for several days.

“I brought it in and immediately posted it on Next Door for help,” Tom Kirsch said.

Krish is heartbroken that someone could abandon a pet.

“It lets you down,” Kirsch said. “It frustrates you that someone can do that and just walk away.”

He gave the leopard to a nearby woman who has experience with reptiles.

“Unfortunately he passed away during the night,” Kirsch said.

Krish has his own theories about where the reptile came from and thinks it must have been out there for four days.

“Someone moved out of an apartment last weekend and left a lot of stuff on our curb,” Krisch said.

10 You met Jeff and Shannon Severts, owners of Simply Pets in Chesapeake. The couple sells and cares for exotic animals, including leopard geckos.

“It’s a very sad situation,” Jeff Sieverts told 10 On Your Side.

It’s not the first time the couple has heard of moving and abandoning an exotic animal, but they usually take it to a local pet store or animal control, keeping it outside during the winter. Do not leave.

“It doesn’t have to be that way,” Sieverts said. “It’s very easy for them to find a home.”

Sieverts told 10 On Your Side that leopard geckos are one of the most popular pet lizards on the market and thrive in warm climates. He believes that the cold weather killed the lizard that was left behind.

“Typically in their cage, you want it to be about 80 degrees. Leopard geckos can live up to 20 years if cared for properly,” Sieverts said.

Abandoning an animal is against the law and a Class 1 misdemeanor in Virginia. Those caught doing so face fines or jail time.
