TINLEY PARK — More than 100 animals were evacuated from the People’s Animal Welfare Society, a south suburban animal shelter in Tinley Park, after a fire broke out in a laundry room around 6:30 Wednesday evening, according to a statement from the shelter.

PAWS President Terry Buckley said Thursday that volunteers were at the shelter when they started smelling smoke, which led them to a small dryer fire. “The biggest loss is smoke damage,” Buckley said, explaining the essential process that veterinarians at Midwest Animal Hospital played to ensure the animals were safe. “We had about 12 or so cats that needed oxygen and two dogs that had some problems with the smoke, but most of them are doing great right now.”

“We have an insurance adjuster coming in. We have a company coming in to clean the building so it’s safe to bring the volunteers and the animals back in,” Buckley said.
