FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne firefighters are investigating the cause of a mobile home fire where 13 pets were found dead Friday morning.

A home in the 4800 block of Bede Drive caught fire around 9:35 a.m. Firefighters arrived just four minutes later to put out the flames. According to a release from the Fort Wayne Fire Department, the owner was reportedly gone and no one was home but 15 pets were inside.

WANE 15 spoke with a neighbor who said the owner feeds several cats, including one named Remy who was seen walking back to the mobile home Friday afternoon.

Crews extinguished the fire at 9:50 a.m. and rescued the two cats, who were later turned over to Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control. Eleven other cats and two dogs died, FFWD said.

FFWD determined the fire started in a bedroom, and the home sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage. A neighbor’s house also sustained minor damage.
